Leadership vs. Executive Coaching – Which is right for me?

What is the difference between leadership coaching and executive coaching?

Let’s discuss the differences and see which option is right for you. While both aim to improve your professional performance, each has a different focus and fits different situations.

Leadership coaching is a fit for many professionals.

In leadership coaching, the focus is on developing leadership skills – while in a leadership role or anticipating one. It is best for professionals that want to improve their skills (e.g., communication, conflict resolution, decision-making). Each coaching session helps identify strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies to improve overall performance.

Executive coaching is critical for leaders.

Executive coaching is best for those senior-level leaders responsible for managing both teams and strategy. It further develops existing and proven leadership ability, business acumen, and strategic thinking. It can also help leaders transition into new roles or address specific challenges in current roles.

Each engagement is strictly confidential and follows a bespoke plan built with and for each leader. Executive coaching is conducted one-on-one, and engagements are comprehensive and span six months to a year or more. By contrast, leadership coaching is sometimes delivered to individuals or small groups, and engagements are less comprehensive and shorter spanning a few sessions or several months.

High-potential leaders stagnate without opportunities.

Often, I meet professionals who demonstrate high potential but feel they aren’t being given progressive paths or growth roles. I urge those professionals to take responsibility for their own growth opportunities and not wait for their organizations to recognize and fund the need.
Your development is not your organization’s responsibility. It’s yours. At times, your development will benefit the company directly – and it will become an organizational priority. Sometimes, your development will be left up to you. It may even lead you out of the organization – even for just a time.

But what are your specific needs?

Although both types of coaching can benefit professionals seeking to grow, the best results will come from choosing the right engagement based on your specific needs and goals.

  • Leadership coaching can benefit anyone and improve their leadership abilities – in a leadership role currently or not.
  • Executive coaching can benefit senior leaders seeking to develop existing and proven leadership and business abilities.

Both types of coaching can be beneficial for individuals looking to develop their leadership abilities, but it is essential to choose the right type of coaching based on your specific needs and goals.
